This changeset removes various heuristics and marker-traits
by a constraint to tuple_like types. Furthermore, several usages
of `apply` can thereby be generalised to work on any tuple_like.
This generalisation is essential for the passing generic data blocks
via `FeedManifold` into the node invocation
...to rely on the new formulation and the extended template `WithIdxSeq`
This is in preparation to use this new iteration scheme also from the tuple_like concept
This resolves an intricate problem related to metaprogramming with
variadic templates and function signatures. Due to exceptional complexity,
a direct solution was blocked for several years, and required a better
organisation of the support code involved; several workarounds were
developed, gradually leading to a transition path, which could now
be completed in an focused clean-up effort over the last week.
Metaprogramming with sequences of types is organised into three layers:
- simple tasks can be solved with the standard facilities of the language,
using pattern match with variadic template specialisations
- the ''type-sequence'' construct `Types<T...>` takes the centre stage
for the explicit definition of collections of types; it can be re-bound
to other variadic templates and supports simple direct manipulation
- for more elaborate and advanced processing tasks, a ''Loki-style type list''
can be obtained from a type-sequence, allowing to perform recursive
list processing task with a technique similar to LISP.
Most of the type-list and type-sequence related eccosystem can be
just switched over, after having added the conversion variants for
the new-style variadic type sequences
Again this was used as opportunity to improve readability of related tests
- provide complete conversion paths old-style ⟷ new-style
- switch the basic tests to the new variadic sequences
- modernise the code; replace typedefs by `using`
- change some struct-style ''meta-functions'' into
constexpr or compile-time constants
Since I've convinced myself during the last years that this kind
of typelist programming is ''not a workaround'' — it is even
superior to pattern matching on variadics for certain kinds
of tasks — the empty struct defined as `NullType` got into
more widespread use as a marker type in the Lumiera code base.
It seems adequate though to give it a much more evocative name
Attempting to reduce the remaining pre-C++11 workarounds before upgrade to C++20...
As a first step: rename the old type-sequence implementation into `TyOLD`
to make it clearly distinguishable; a new variadic implementation `TySeq`
was already introduced as partial workaround, and the next steps
will be to switch over essential parts of the type-sequence library.
After all the preparation, now this panes out quite well:
* use a simple 3-way branch structure
* the model type was already pre-selected by the `_Join` Model selector
* can just pass the result-model elements to a constructor/builder
* incremental extension can be directly mapped to the predecessor model
This is a rather obnoxious limitation of C++ variadics:
the inability to properly match against a mixed sequence with variadics.
The argument pack must always be the last element, which precludes to match
the last or even the penultimate element (which we need here).
After some tinkering, I found a way to recast this as ''rebinding to a remoulded sequence'',
and could package a multitude of related tools into a single helper-template,
which works without any further library dependencies.
🠲 extract into a separate header (`variadic-rebind.hpp`) for ease of use.
Unfortunately, there are some common syntactic structures, which can not easily be dissected by regular expressions alone, since they entail nested subexpressions. While it is possible to get beyond those fundamental limitations with some trickery, doing so remains precisely that, ''trickery.''
After fighting some inner conflicts, since ''I do know how to write a parser'' —
in the end I have brought myself to just do it.
And indeed, as you'd might expect, I have looked into existing library solutions,
and I would not like to have any one of them as part of the project.
* I do not want a ''parser engine'' or ''parser generator''
* I want the directness of recursive-descent, but combined with Regular Expressions as terminal
* I want to see the structure of the used grammar at the definition site of the custom parser function
* I want deep integration of ''model bindings'' into the parse process, i.e. binding-λ
* I do not want to write model-dissecting or pattern-matching code after the parse
* I do not want to expose ''Monads'' as an interface, since they tend to spread unhealthy structure to surrounding code
* I do not want to leak technicalities of the parse mechanics into the using code
* I do not want to impose hard to remember specific conventions onto the user
Thus I've set the following aims:
* The usage should require only a single header include (ideally header-only)
* The entrance point should be a small number of DSL-starter functions
* The parser shall be implemented by recursive-descent, using the parser-combinator technique
* But I want that wrapped into a DSL, to be able to control what is (not) provided or exposed.
* I want a stateful, applicative logic, since parsing, by its very nature, is stateful!
* I want complete compile-time typing, visible to the optimiser, without a virtual »Parser« interface
And last but not least, ''I do not want to create a ticket, since I do not know if those goals can be achieved...''
Tuples and the ''C++ tuple protocol'' build upon variadic arguments
and are thus rather tedious to handle, especially in this situation here,
where the argument can ''sometimes be a tuple...''
Several years ago I made the observation that processing by explicit ''type sequences''
(Loki-style) is much simpler to handle and easier to lift to a generic level of processing.
Thus I'll attempt now to extract the ''iteration and extraction part'' of the logic into a new helper.
`lib::meta::ElmTypes<TUP>` allows to process all ''tuple-like types'' and generic ''type sequences'' uniformely
and enables to use both styles interchangably (btw, it is quite common to ''abuse'' `std::tuple` as a type sequence).
With this helper, we can now
- build a ''type sequence'' from any ''tuple-like'' object (and vice-versa)
- re-bind (i.e. transfer the template parameters to another template)
- apply some wrapper
- create AND / OR evaluations over the types
This changeset is a sketch how to switch the entire implementation of the ''Invocation Adatper''
over to a generic argument usage scheme. This requires the ability to
- detect if some argument is actually a ''structured type''
- investigate components of such a structured type to draw a distinction between »Buffer« and »Parameter«
- ''lift'' the implementation of simple values to work on tuples
- provide a way to ''bridge'' from ''tuple-style'' programming to ''array access''

Lumiera as a whole is distributed under Copyleft, GNU General Public License Version 2 or above.
For this to become legally effective, the ''File COPYING in the root directory is sufficient.''
The licensing header in each file is not strictly necessary, yet considered good practice;
attaching a licence notice increases the likeliness that this information is retained
in case someone extracts individual code files. However, it is not by the presence of some
text, that legally binding licensing terms become effective; rather the fact matters that a
given piece of code was provably copyrighted and published under a license. Even reformatting
the code, renaming some variables or deleting parts of the code will not alter this legal
situation, but rather creates a derivative work, which is likewise covered by the GPL!
The most relevant information in the file header is the notice regarding the
time of the first individual copyright claim. By virtue of this initial copyright,
the first author is entitled to choose the terms of licensing. All further
modifications are permitted and covered by the License. The specific wording
or format of the copyright header is not legally relevant, as long as the
intention to publish under the GPL remains clear. The extended wording was
based on a recommendation by the FSF. It can be shortened, because the full terms
of the license are provided alongside the distribution, in the file COPYING.
...turns out this is entirely generic and not tied to the context
within ActivityDetector, where it was first introduced to build a
mock functor to log all invocations.
Basically this meta-function generates a new instantiation of the
template X, using the variadic argument pack from template U<ARGS...>
...for coverage of the Activity-Language,
various invocations of unspecific functions must be verified,
with the additional twist that the implementation avoids indirections
and is thus hard to rig for tests.
Solution-Idea: provide a λ-mock to log any invocation into the
Event-Log helper, which was created some years ago to trace GUI communication...
as it turned out, the solution from yesterday works only with uniform argument lists,
but not with arbitrarily mixed types. Moreover the whole trickery with the
indices was shitty -- better use a predicate decision on template argument level.
This simple solution somehow just didn't occur to me...
...still somewhat unsatisfactory, because
- no clear compile error message when invoking pickArg with insufficient arguments
- the default initialisation case in SelectVararg is duplicated and messy
some time ago we abandoned our own tuple type in favour of std::tuple
Since then, the helpers and ported utilities provide some generic helpers
to deal with variadic argument sequences, especially to build index sequences,
which in turn can be used to "pick" individual arguments from a variadic parameter pack.
The expectation is for this part of the support library gradually to grow and
in parts to replace the existing type sequence processing helpers. The expectation
is that we'll retain the basic type sequence, lib::meta::Types, but retrofit it
to rely on variadic arguments
since the adoption of C++11, we gradually transition our metaprogramming helpers
to support and rely on variadic template parameters. For the time being,
we just augment existing facilities when it comes in handy, yet some more
heavyweight lifting and overall clean-up remains to be done eventually.
